We started our Eastern European tour in Riga, Latvia. One of the reasons we have come here is to trace our ancestral roots. The Baltic states, which include Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, were major Jewish centers before World War II. We didn't know what to expect, but quickly realized, that Latvia is a beautiful and unspoiled country. With a population of just over 2 million, there is little city development. Driving through the country, you see nothing but green.
The capital of Riga has a quintessentially European Old Quarter and stunning Art Nouveau buildings in the "New Town." We knew we had found our Jewish roots when we entered the weekend food market and saw all the food we are so used to during the Jewish Holidays. Also, many of the shoppers reminded us of our Grandparents! Lunch that day consisted of pickles and cheese on rye bread!
After leaving Riga, we went castle crawling and spent a few days in the countryside. It felt amazing to breathe the fresh air and be on the open road again.
