Berlin

Berlin is a stark contrast to the old-world European cities we have visited over the past month. The entire city was demolished during WWII and what stands today is a modern Berlin with buildings designed by today's top architects. In our experience, the Germans have been the most open, honest and responsible in their account of their role in WWII. In modern day, unified Berlin, there exists a positive attitude towards the future, not a scarred society from the mistakes of misguided regimes. Just as the city erects beautifully sculpted modern landmarks, of which include a spectacular Jewish Museum by Daniel Libeskind and a striking Holocaust Memorial by Peter Eisenman, you get a sense that the people are building a new future for themselves while acknowledging their past.

Prague

We left the sleepy town of Olomouc for the grand city of Prague. Iconic Gothic towers and street side cafes lurk around every corner of this gorgeous Czech capital. Prague castle is a city in itself and houses the most impressive cathedral we have seen in Europe so far. As we travel through this region we are learning so much about 20th Century European history. It feels even more special to be here as Eastern Europe celebrates the 20th anniversary of the fall of Communism.
